We had an amazing time premiering Russell Hartenberger’s new work for percussion ensemble and 5 vocalists!

This is part of a larger project that I have been working on with Dr. Greg Beyer, Jean Christophe-Leroy, and Christian Baugher. We learned the sacred Oro Seco on batá drums, and then we arranged the music for berimbaus with caxixi accompaniment.

Daydreaming in the Rain is a new work for percussion ensemble composed by Andrew Wray. The work ties together Wray's ear for jazz harmony and love for all things rhythmic, like groove, odd meters, and syncopation. Each section builds on what came before it, ultimately circling around to a final statement of one of the piece's themes, but recontextualized orchestrationally and rhythmically.
Score and parts for "Daydreaming in the Rain" are available at awraymusic.com/shop

I commissioned this piece from Sapphire in 2019, and it was premiered at the UNL Flyover New Music Series on October 3rd, 2019. I played double second steel pans, and Erik Strikland played piano.

Please enjoy this solo from my junior recital! If possible, I would recommend listening with headphones!
